That upturn in form tracks almost perfectly with the races Bell has chosen: the most recent win came at Goodwood just this week, and before that another victory in August. When the horse gets the right distance and the right race type, it delivers. But here is the puzzle: A Major Payne has won nothing from nine attempts in top-level company. It simply does not have the class to compete with the strongest fields. It is a horse for mid-tier races at specific distances, and when those conditions line up, it can be very sharp.
