The wins he has got have been proper ones. His first came at Catterick Bridge in October 2022, and he followed it up with a Class 2 victory at Ayr in September 2023 — one of the better races in Britain — where trainer Adrian Keatley recalled a wave of punters backing him and the relief of not letting them down. Keatley was already dreaming bigger: the Ayr Gold Cup, one of the most famous sprint races on the calendar, went on the bucket list that afternoon. Wobwobwob's most recent win came at Thirsk in May 2024, which is now 26 months ago, and he has not troubled the judge since.
What makes him interesting is the very specific set of conditions he seems to need. On slightly wet or muddy ground, he has won 2 of 8 races — 25%, a genuinely good return, more than three times his overall win rate. At 5 to 6½ furlongs, he has taken 2 of 18 races, or roughly 1 in 9. He is, by every account, a horse who is a little slow to warm up, gets outpaced early in a fast race, and then comes flying home late. That style only works when the ground is soft enough to stop the leaders getting away from him and the pace is hot enough to leave them vulnerable. Get those two things right, and he can produce something special. Get them wrong, and he finishes mid-pack, which explains a great deal of that 45-race career.
Recent form shows a second place just six races ago, and Keatley is notably optimistic right now — suggesting the horse is building toward something and that a return to Ayr for one of the Cups is genuinely on the table. He raced just one day ago, so the yard is keeping him busy. Jockey Tom Marquand has spoken warmly about his toughness, describing him as a "genuine little horse" who digs deep when it matters. Ryan Sexton, his most regular pilot, has ridden him 8 times for 1 win. The pieces feel like they are assembling again.
