A win at Catterick Bridge in October 2022 got things started, and then came the standout moment of its career: a Class 2 victory at Ayr in September 2023, which is one of the better races you can win in Britain. That is not a race a horse stumbles into by accident — it takes genuine ability to land one of those. The most recent win came at Thirsk in May 2024, but that was now 23 months ago, and the six races since have brought nothing better than a second place, with a couple of twelfth-place finishes thrown in for good measure.

The conditions matter with this horse. On wet or muddy ground, Wobwobwob has won 2 of 8 races — that is 25%, or 1 in every 4, which is a completely different animal from the overall picture. Over five to six-and-a-half furlongs, it has taken 2 of 17 races, roughly 1 in every 8. Both of those numbers suggest a horse that needs things to fall right — the right trip, the right ground — rather than one that wins freely in any conditions. What is more telling is the Class 3 record: zero wins from 15 attempts. It managed to beat the better horses in a Class 2 at Ayr, but the middle tier has proven oddly stubborn.

The machinery around the horse is working well enough — Wobwobwob just needs to rediscover the spark. It raced only yesterday, so clearly the team still believe there is something left to find. With the right soft ground on a sharp sprint track, stranger things have happened.
