Witch Hunter

The clearest pattern in his record is his love of normal, standard ground. On that surface he has won four of his last 16 races, a 25 percent win rate that stands out sharply against his overall 12 percent record. He is also a course specialist at Wolverhampton, where he has won twice from four attempts. Both facts suggest a horse who runs well when the deck is not stacked against him—when the track is right and the race design plays to his strengths.

What makes him genuinely interesting is the caliber of his wins. This is not a horse grinding out low-grade victories. He won a Class 1 race—one of the very best races in Britain—at Newbury in August 2023, and has also won at the top level of Class 2 racing at Ascot and most recently at Newcastle in January 2026. His trainer, Richard Hannon, has been explicit about his ceiling: he sees Witch Hunter as capable of winning one of the big handicaps at Royal Ascot this season, describing him as having "so much ability" even if he is hard to time. The trainer has also noted that Witch Hunter misses the break—he does not jump out fast—but compensates with genuine pace in the straight. Sean Levey has ridden him to three wins from 23 races together, a respectable 13 percent return.

His form right now is encouraging without being spectacular. He raced six days ago, finishing sixth, and before that won at Thirsk two weeks earlier. He is being kept active and is clearly still capable. At seven, with the right race and the right ground, Witch Hunter remains a horse worth watching—not a certain thing, but a genuine contender when everything aligns.
