Wise Eagle

The most striking thing about Wise Eagle is what he does at Musselburgh, the seaside track near Edinburgh. He has won 3 of his 7 races there — that is nearly 1 in every 2, compared to his overall average of 1 in 5. For a horse competing regularly against good opposition, that kind of dominance at a single venue is genuinely unusual. Something about that track suits him, and the team at Adam Nicol's yard in Seahouses, Northumberland, clearly know it.

The partnership with jockey Daniel Tudhope tells a similar story. In 12 races together, Tudhope has ridden Wise Eagle to 4 wins — a win rate of 33%, or 1 in every 3 rides. That is an extraordinary number given the level this horse competes at. When those two are paired up, it is worth paying attention.

Most of Wise Eagle's races have come at Class 2 level — one of the better tiers in British racing — and he has won 2 of those 18 attempts, or about 1 in 9. That is a modest return at face value, but staying competitive in that company as a nine-year-old is itself a statement. His two Class 2 wins, at Pontefract in October 2022 and Musselburgh in April 2023, represent real achievements against quality fields.

The honest part of the picture is that his last win came at Catterick Bridge in December 2024 — 17 months ago — and his recent form of two seconds and a third among his last six races suggests he is knocking on the door without quite getting through it. He raced just yesterday, so he is clearly still in good enough shape to be running. Whether another win is coming is the question, but for a nine-year-old trained out of a small Northumberland yard that has sent out 26 winners this season, Wise Eagle remains a horse worth following.
