Wildfell

The partnership with jockey J F Egan has been the bright spot of Wildfell's career. Together they have won 4 of their 16 races, a 25 percent win rate that significantly outperforms the horse's form with other riders. That kind of compatibility—horse and jockey understanding each other—can make a real difference, and suggests Wildfell performs best when it has familiar hands in the saddle. Trained by D J Jeffreys at Hinton on the Green in Worcestershire, the horse represents steady rather than spectacular work from a modest yard that has sent out just three winners this season.

What stands out most sharply is the layoff. Wildfell has not raced in 248 days—roughly eight months—and that gap is substantial for a horse of its age. The last two wins came back in 2023, at Lingfield in March and Doncaster in June, nearly three years ago now. Since then, six consecutive races without a victory, though the recent form lines of 11-12-9-7-6-23 suggest the horse has been in the placings more often than not—it is simply not converting those near-misses into wins. The return to racing after such a long break will be a test of whether Wildfell still has the form to compete, or whether the time away has dulled its edge.
