Yet at Nottingham he has found his level completely. In just three races there he has won twice, giving him a formidable 67% record at that track. This is the kind of course speciality that trainers live for, and Jack Jones's Newmarket yard has clearly worked out what suits War Chant at Nottingham. Whether that magic has simply faded, or whether the horse needs another trip there to rediscover it, remains to be seen. For now, War Chant looks like a horse treading water — still competing, still occasionally threatening, but a long way from his days as a consistent winner.
