The recent form makes for uncomfortable reading. In the last six races, Urban War has managed just one placed finish, with the other runs producing little to shout about, including a last-place finish in the most recent sequence. Racing just yesterday, the horse remains active and in training, which at least tells you the yard hasn't given up — and Hanlon's team have been in decent nick this season, sending out 11 winners, so the infrastructure for success is clearly there.
The level Urban War competes at is worth understanding. Class 4 is the middle tier of British racing — not the bargain basement, but far from the big occasions either. At that level, the horse has run five times without winning once. That is not a record that suggests a change of scenery or a drop in grade is about to unlock something special. More likely, Urban War is simply a horse that runs reliably, finishes occasionally, and wins never. Some horses are built for the fight; others, it seems, are built for the participation. At this stage of its career, Urban War looks firmly like the latter.
