What makes Urban Lion interesting is his success at the top level. In April 2025, trainer Jack Channon spoke with real enthusiasm about the horse's potential, comparing him to one of the yard's previous winners and eyeing big handicap races like the Royal Hunt Cup and Golden Mile. That optimism was justified when Urban Lion won a Class 2 race at Sandown in June 2025, proving he could perform on the major circuit. The trouble is that Class 2 company is no longer reliable ground — he's won just 1 of 6 attempts at that level.

Channon, who runs the West Ilsley yard and has sent out 46 winners already this season, hasn't given up on his charge. After the Doncaster win, he made it clear the plan is to target straight-mile handicaps where Urban Lion seems to run best, chasing "black type" — racing's shorthand for listed or graded placings that add lustre to a horse's record. The partnership between Urban Lion and jockey Edward Greatrex has been particularly fruitful: Greatrex has ridden him in nine races and won three of them, a 33% win rate that is markedly better than the horse's overall record. That kind of understanding between horse and rider, combined with a trainer who clearly believes in the horse's ceiling, suggests Urban Lion's lean run may be temporary rather than terminal.
