Trojan Truth

The real insight into Trojan Truth comes from understanding what suits it. On fast, dry ground, the record transforms: six wins from 19 races puts it at a 32% win rate, nearly double its overall average. This is a horse that plainly loves firm conditions, and when the track is soft or muddy, expect the performance to drop away. At Leicester, too, it has found form: two wins from five races there suggests it has a particular affinity for the course. Trainer Ed de Giles, based at Ledbury in Herefordshire, has had modest success with it — the yard sent out eight winners this season, and Trojan Truth has been part of that effort, though not recently.

What strikes most is the stability of the horse's level. All seven of its wins have come in Class 6 races, the lowest tier of competitive racing, where it has won seven from 26 races (27%). It does not venture much higher, and that consistency suggests this is simply where Trojan Truth belongs. Jockey Trevor Whelan, who rides it most often, has managed only one win from eight races aboard — a 12% return — which hints that the partnership works best when ground and course conspire in the horse's favour. Recent form shows placings creeping in (a third last time out, a second the time before), which keeps hope alive that another win might yet come. But at seven, after 15 months without one, Trojan Truth is increasingly a horse living on reputation rather than current achievement.
