He was originally sourced from the Dubai breeze-ups, and Brittain noted that while a wet track at Nottingham left him bogged down, the artificial surface at Wolverhampton proved both a physical and mental tonic. That insight into his preferences has shaped his career, yet somehow Tough Enough has been unable to string together the kind of consistent form needed to add to his win tally.

Cam Hardie, his most frequent partner, has ridden him in eight races without a win, which suggests either a mismatch in partnership or simply that the opportunities have not aligned when jockey and horse have paired up. With his trainer's yard in good form — sending out twenty-three winners this season — Tough Enough remains in capable hands, but at his age and without a win in more than a thousand days, time is working against him.
