What's worth noting is the yard behind it. Andrew Balding trains out of Kingsclere in Hampshire, and this season his operation has sent out 202 winners — a figure that puts it firmly among the busiest and most successful yards in Britain. When a trainer of that calibre keeps a young horse in work and racing, it's usually because they see something worth developing. Two-year-olds are learning their job with every run, and a second place from three attempts tells you The Dancing Pirate has already been competitive — it's beaten horses, even if it hasn't yet won a race.
The recent run of 4-4-2 (reading oldest to newest) shows a horse that found its best form in the middle of that sequence, then came back to earth a little — though "a little" is doing some work there, since placing second is still a solid result at this stage. At two years old, with a full career still ahead and one of the country's top yards in its corner, there's plenty of time for the first win to come.
