Tattycoram

Trained by Ralph Beckett at his yard in Kimpton, Hampshire — a stable that has sent out 109 winners already this season, which tells you plenty about the level of operation behind her — Tattycoram opened her account at Sandown Park in April 2025 in a Class 2 race, one of the top events in Britain. Black type, as it is known in racing, is the mark of a horse who has competed and placed at the highest level, and she earned it that day. Beckett has spoken warmly about her as a physical specimen, describing her as a proper model and one of the best homebreds he has encountered. High praise from a trainer who is not short of good horses.

On normal ground, she is two wins from three races — that is a 67% win rate, which is a remarkable number by any standard. Racing on fast, dry ground or anything unusual seems to be beside the point; give her conditions that suit and she tends to deliver. Her recent form reads 1-5-3-3-4-1, meaning she has bookended her last six runs with wins, which is exactly the kind of uptick in form that gets people talking.

Most recently, she won at Goodwood just this week — a track that tends to reward horses with a certain fluency and class. Beckett has been candid about the fact that as a three-year-old she was a little hot-headed around the starting gates, and that patience was required to get the best from her. The improvement from three to four has been marked, both physically and in terms of temperament, and that combination of a maturing mind and a strengthening body is often what separates a promising horse from a genuinely good one.

There is an Oaks entry in her name. Beckett has not ruled it out, though he was careful to say that any decision will be made in her best interests. For a horse who only found her feet this season, the fact that the conversation is even happening says everything about how far Tattycoram has come.
