That was also the day a question mark got answered: Clover had quietly wondered whether Tabletalk would handle the conditions, and the horse stayed on strongly to put the matter to rest. It was the kind of performance that signals a horse has arrived at a new level.

Since then, the record tells a harder story. Tabletalk has not won in its last six races, all of them at Class 1 — the very highest grade in British racing — and has drawn a blank in all seven attempts at that level across its career. Zero wins from seven races at the top flight sounds bleak, but it is worth understanding what that actually means: this is a horse that keeps being entered in the most competitive races in the country and keeps finishing in the mix. Recent form of 5-2-3-6-2-2 shows a horse that places regularly without quite converting, which points to quality rather than failure.

Jockey Rossa Ryan has been the regular partner, winning 2 of their 6 races together — a win rate of 33%, or 1 in 3, which is a genuinely strong partnership by any measure. And Clover, who has sent out 23 winners already this season from his Newmarket base, clearly has not given up on finding the right spot. He has spoken about a near-miss at Newbury on the horse's most recent start, where Tabletalk was only just edged out over a mile and a half, and is now weighing up options including a Group 3 contest back at the same track. The logic is simple: York's top race over a longer trip is an option, but a slightly kinder race at a course where Tabletalk has already shown it loves the place might finally be the moment those Class 1 blanks get crossed off.
