Sweet Reward

The most interesting thing about Sweet Reward is where he wins. Goodwood, one of Britain's most beautiful and technically demanding tracks with its sweeping hillside bends, is where he first broke his duck back in September 2021 — and he has since won twice there from 9 visits. That is a 22% win rate at a track where most horses never win at all. Course form like that is not a coincidence; it suggests the track genuinely suits how he moves. He has also shown a clear preference for dry, fast ground, winning 2 of his 8 races in those conditions — a 25% win rate that stands out sharply against his overall record.

His most recent win came at Lingfield Park in late May, where jockey Olivia Tubb made the running and let him stretch out over a longer distance than his previous run. She was clear afterwards that a mile is simply too short for him — he is a big, galloping horse who needs room to build momentum, and over the right trip on a good day, he can be hard to peg back. It was a performance trainer Jonathan Portman clearly relished, noting how pleasing it is to see older horses keep coming back season after season.

That said, there is a question mark hanging over him. Portman admitted last August that a setback had disrupted his preparation and that racing was perhaps beginning to catch up with him. That candour from a trainer is always worth noting — it does not mean Sweet Reward is finished, but it does suggest he needs everything to fall right. One thing that has consistently worked against him is stepping up in class: he has run 14 times in Class 3 races — one rung below the top tier — without winning once. He is at his best when the conditions suit and the company is not too fierce. Get those things right, and he remains capable of making his presence felt.
