Sweet Reward

His jockey at Lingfield, Olivia Tubb, was clear about the game plan: get to the front and stay there. She described Sweet Reward as a big, galloping horse who needs room to build momentum, and that's exactly what she gave him. The mile trip had caught him out the time before, but back over the right distance he ran the field ragged from the front. Trainer Jonathan Portman, based at Upper Lambourn, noted that Sweet Reward had enjoyed a good winter break — and there's something almost charming about an older horse returning each spring like he has unfinished business. Portman's yard has sent out 46 winners this season, so this is clearly a team that knows how to get results.

Dig into the numbers and a few things stand out. Sweet Reward genuinely loves dry, fast ground, winning 2 of his 8 races in those conditions — a 25% win rate that makes him one of those horses worth keeping an eye on when summer arrives and the tracks firm up. Goodwood is also a place he's made his own, winning 2 of 9 races there, including his first-ever career win back in September 2021. That's a meaningful connection with a course — some horses just suit the contours and rhythm of a track, and Goodwood seems to suit him. His regular partner Rob Hornby has ridden him 22 times for 2 wins together, though it was Tubb in the saddle for this latest victory.

There's one caveat worth noting. Most of his racing has come at Class 3 level — one step below the very top races — and he hasn't yet managed a win at that grade in 14 attempts. His wins tend to come when the conditions drop to his favour. But at nine, with wins in consecutive recent outings and a trainer who clearly cares for him, Sweet Reward looks like a horse enjoying himself. That counts for a lot.
