Storm Call

Both wins have come at different tracks and in different circumstances, which at least shows Storm Call is not a one-trick pony. The first came at Windsor in May 2024, and the second — more recently — at Redcar in October 2025, nine months ago now. What is slightly puzzling is that Storm Call has raced seven times at Class 4 level, the bread-and-butter tier of British racing where horses of this ability are expected to be most competitive, and has not won once. The wins have come elsewhere, almost as if this horse saves something for a change of scenery.

The yard behind Storm Call is Michael and David Easterby, based in Sheriff Hutton in North Yorkshire — a family operation with serious pedigree and 55 winners on the board already this season, which tells you they know what they are doing. Their difficulty is that regular partner Joanna Mason, who has ridden Storm Call in 5 of its races, has yet to get the best out of this particular horse, going winless in all five. That is not necessarily a criticism — sometimes a horse and rider simply do not click — but it is a thread worth watching.

The recent form makes for interesting reading: the last six results read 6-4-5-8-1-4, and that "1" — a win — sits in the middle of two largely disappointing efforts. Storm Call raced just yesterday, finishing fourth most recently, which means we are right in the thick of it. There are five places on the board across 20 races, so the horse is competitive more often than the win tally suggests — it just has a habit of finding something too good on the day. For a horse that keeps showing up and keeps running into the placings, the question is whether another win is coming or whether that Redcar victory will remain the last highlight for some time.
