The most striking detail in Stage Show's record is how much racing it has done without reward. Twenty-three of its 31 races have come at Class 5 level — the bread-and-butter end of the sport — and it has won just once at that level from those 23 attempts. That is a tough stat to dress up, but it also shows the horse keeps turning up. It has placed eight times in total, meaning roughly one race in four has produced some sort of return. Not flashy, but not hopeless either.

Adam Wedge has ridden Stage Show seven times without a win between them, which is the kind of partnership that keeps the yard patient but rarely celebratory. The yard at West Buckland, trained by Alexandra Dunn, has sent out two winners this season, so Stage Show's Exeter win represents a meaningful contribution to a relatively modest season's tally. Dunn's operation is not a factory yard churning out winners by the dozen — every success counts.

Over longer distances of two miles and beyond, Stage Show has won 1 from 15 races, which at 7% is actually its best win rate across any category. That might sound faint praise, but it tells you the horse at least has a chance when the race stretches out and stamina comes into play. The recent run of form — finishing fifth, sixth, first, fourth, seventh and ninth across the last six outings — captures the horse perfectly: inconsistent, occasionally frustrating, but capable of putting it all together on the right day, as Exeter proved. Whether another day like that comes around is the question Stage Show's supporters will be asking each time it lines up.
