In fact, Spirit Catcher has never won at that level across 12 attempts, which tells you something about the ceiling it is bumping against. Getting placed regularly in tough company is no disgrace, but it also means a lot of near-misses without the big moment to show for it.

The partnership with jockey Joe Fanning is the most encouraging thread in this horse's story. Together they have won 3 of their 10 races, which works out at 30% — wins roughly 1 in every 3 times they team up. That is a striking number in a sport where even the best combinations win far less often. Trainer Philip Kirby, based at East Appleton in North Yorkshire, clearly has faith in that pairing, and with 34 winners sent out already this season, the yard is in good form even if Spirit Catcher itself has gone quiet.

And quiet is the word. The last win came at Ripon in August 2023 — over 32 months ago now — and the last six races have brought finishing positions of 12th, 15th, 8th, 11th, 11th, and 13th. Those are not the numbers of a horse threatening to break through. Still, Spirit Catcher raced just yesterday, so the team clearly believe there is still something worth chasing. Whether the ground turns soft enough to unlock that old magic is another question entirely.
