Spangled Mac

The ground matters a lot with this horse. On fast, dry conditions he wins 3 from 10 races — 30% — which is already excellent. But on slightly softer ground he becomes even sharper, winning 2 of just 5 races, a 40% hit rate. When the ground is in his favour, he is a horse worth taking seriously. He also has a particular fondness for Great Yarmouth, winning 2 of his 3 races there — a remarkable ratio for any racehorse and the kind of course form that makes trainers and punters alike take notice when his name appears in the entries.

The awkward truth, though, is that Spangled Mac has not won for 32 months. His last victory came at Newcastle in November 2023, and his last six runs — finishing 7th, 13th, 12th, 3rd, 7th, and 3rd — paint a picture of a horse running consistently without quite finding the winning thread. He races mostly at Class 2 level, and at that grade he has managed just 1 win from 21 attempts, a 5% rate. The level is demanding, and he has spent much of his career just below the threshold of it.

George Boughey's yard — which has sent out 99 winners this season alone, making it one of the most productive stables in Britain right now — clearly has a soft spot for him. Boughey has described him as a fun horse who might be running slightly above his ideal level, but who could pop up with a win at any point. It is the trainer's way of saying: don't write him off, but don't plan your retirement around him either. His regular jockey Billy Loughnane has won just 1 of their 8 races together, though Loughnane previously noted that stretching Spangled Mac out to six and seven furlongs seemed to unlock something in him.

Raced just yesterday and still active, this is a horse that keeps showing up. Whether a win is coming soon is anyone's guess — even his trainer's.
