The recent form is a little mixed. Reading it from most recent backwards — 10th, 1st, 7th, 6th, 2nd, 5th — you can see a horse that hasn't kicked on consistently since that Wolverhampton breakthrough five weeks ago, with a couple of disappointing efforts either side of that career-best run. The 2nd place sitting just beyond it, though, suggests the talent is there when things click. Three places from ten races overall means South Coast Star has been in the mix more often than that single win implies — just not quite sealing the deal.
Hugo Palmer trains the horse from his yard at Malpas in Cheshire, and this is a stable in sharp form right now: 67 winners already this season is a serious number, and it tells you this isn't a team muddling through. Palmer himself described South Coast Star earlier in her development as a horse who "goes quite well" — measured praise, but from a trainer who has plenty to shout about elsewhere, it carries weight. The fact that she was considered a step behind one of his other horses at the time also suggests there may be more improvement to come as she matures and fills into her frame.
Still only three years old and raced just yesterday, South Coast Star is very much a work in progress. Horses at this age can take time to find their rhythm, and the combination of a sharp trainer, a recent win to build confidence on, and the sheer volume of races under her belt mean she arrives at each run knowing her job better than before. Whether she can string results together is the interesting question now.
