A seventh, then a win, then a seventh again, then a runner-up, then fourth, then tenth most recently — it is not a smooth upward curve, but there is clearly ability in there. Three places from eight races means Siouxpersonic has been competitive far more often than the win column alone would suggest, finishing in the first three on 4 occasions in total.

The Southwell win is worth noting because that track has its own character — an all-weather surface that suits horses who travel smoothly and handle an artificial surface — and Siouxpersonic showed it could handle it when the moment came. Whether it can replicate that away from Southwell remains the open question, given it has only managed a 33% win rate there, taking 1 from 3 races at that track.

The yard behind the horse gives reasons for optimism. Julie Camacho, based in Norton in North Yorkshire, has sent out 46 winners already this season — that is the output of a stable that knows what it is doing and places its horses intelligently. When a trainer of that volume gets a horse into winning shape, it tends not to be an accident.

Having raced just yesterday, Siouxpersonic is right in the thick of an active campaign. At three years old, there is still room to develop, and the mixture of near-misses and that one breakthrough win suggests a horse that is competitive at Class 5 level — the bread-and-butter tier of British racing — without yet having mastered it consistently. The next few runs will tell us whether September's win was a sign of things to come or simply a good day at the office.
