Two wins from just six visits there makes it Simple Star's happiest hunting ground — a 1-in-3 record at a specific track is the kind of stat that catches the eye of anyone filling out a racecard. Perth is a tight, turning circuit in Scotland, and some horses simply fall in love with a place. Simple Star appears to be one of them.

Trainer Dianne Sayer runs a small yard up in Hackthorpe, Cumbria, and has sent out 15 winners already this season — a healthy return that suggests the horses are in good order. Most of Simple Star's races have been ridden by Andrew Mullen, though that partnership has yet to produce a win from seven attempts together, which is a curious footnote given the horse's overall record. The last win came at Musselburgh in August 2025 — nine months ago now — but crucially, Simple Star raced just yesterday, so whatever form the horse is in, it is very much live and current.

This is a horse that has found its level competing in the mid-tier of the sport, and at eight years old it knows what it's doing. Whether it can find its way back to the winner's enclosure is the question — but the ingredients are clearly still there.
