Saratoga Gold

For much of its career, Saratoga Gold was thought to prefer softer ground, but that assumption proved wrong. Its trainer noted with surprise that the horse actually likes fast, firm conditions, and seems to travel well across longer distances. A recent third-place finish at Newmarket over a mile and a half was its first attempt at that trip, suggesting there may still be room to find the right formula. The horse was gelded before last season and responded with four wins, including a hat-trick late in the summer, most of them over a mile and four furlongs on undulating tracks where it excels. Since then, however, it has not won in its last six races—a dry spell that now stretches back 40 months to July 2023 at Kempton Park.

Kieran Shoemark has ridden Saratoga Gold six times and won twice, a win rate of one in three that is significantly better than the horse's overall record. With trainer Kevin & Lauren Frost's Averham Park yard continuing to fire winners this season, there are signs of life yet. Saratoga Gold raced just yesterday and remains active. For a horse that still wins at Class 4 when conditions align, and that has shown it can excel at Epsom and over middle distances, the question is whether it can find that winning formula again rather than whether it still has the ability to do so.
