The horse also has a clear sweet spot for trips around a mile and three to a mile and four furlongs, winning all 3 of its career victories over that range from just 6 attempts — a 50% win rate that underlines real aptitude rather than luck. It also clearly appreciates normal ground conditions, winning 2 of its 3 races on a standard surface.

The trainer behind all this is Gordon Elliott, one of the biggest names in Irish racing, operating out of Longwood in County Meath. His yard has sent out 210 winners already this season alone — a staggering number that reflects an industrial-scale operation with serious quality throughout. Having a horse like Royal Approval in that string is no surprise, but it does mean competition for entries and stable confidence matters. The fact that Elliott keeps running this horse at Newcastle, and keeps winning with it, suggests the team knows exactly what they have.

Recent form is the one caveat worth noting. The last six runs read 6-–-5-6-1-11, meaning one win sandwiched between some disappointing efforts and a non-completion. The Newcastle win on 26 June was the obvious highlight, but the runs either side of it give the impression of a horse that can be inconsistent when the conditions or trip aren't quite right. Get the combination right — Newcastle, a mile and a half, normal ground — and Royal Approval is a different animal entirely. Finding that combination again is the puzzle worth watching.
