The recent form makes for sobering reading: the last six runs read 5-12-5-4-7-3, and none of them end in a one. That sequence stretches back nearly a year without a win, and the step up to Class 2 — some of the most competitive races in Britain — has yielded nothing, with zero wins from three attempts at that level. It is not a disgrace to come up short against that quality of opposition, but it does suggest the ceiling may be in view.
What works in Rogue Temptation's favour is the yard behind it. Edward Bethell trains out of Middleham in North Yorkshire and has sent out 62 winners already this season — that is a team in serious form, and horses from that stable tend to be placed with care and purpose. When a trainer is firing at that rate, you can usually trust that a horse is running where it belongs and is being given a fair chance to show what it can do. The question for Rogue Temptation is whether it can find a race that brings the best out of it once more, the way Haydock did on that July afternoon.
At three years old, there is still time. Horses this age are still learning their trade, still finding out what trips and conditions suit them, still maturing. One win does not make a career, but it does prove the ability is in there somewhere. The job now is finding the key.
