Roaring Ralph

The horse's real strength is distance and ground. Give him fast, dry conditions and a race around 1 mile 1 furlong to 1 mile 2 furlongs, and he becomes a different proposition: he has won five of eight races at that trip, a win rate of 62%, which is genuinely impressive. Feed him softer or heavier ground, though, and his confidence seems to evaporate — he has managed only three wins from seven races on wet or muddy ground. He is also something of a course specialist at Ayr, where he has won twice from four races. At Class 5 level, where he typically competes, his record is modest: 2 wins from 23 races. His form over his last six runs has been patchy — a win, a place, another win, a third, a 17th, and a 7th — the kind of inconsistency that suggests a horse still capable of picking up a race but never quite a sure thing.

Michael Dods' Piercebridge yard trains him, and Connor Beasley rides him often enough. The pairing has produced three wins from 15 races together, a win rate of 20%, which is fractionally better than Ralph's overall record. Given his preference for a specific distance and ground type, Roaring Ralph is probably at his most interesting when entered in the right conditions — but his recent form suggests those right conditions need to come up fairly often if he is to keep adding to his nine career wins.
