Rich Rhythm

His trainer Harriet Bethell, based at Arnold in East Yorkshire, describes him as enormous — built more like a horse you'd expect to see jumping fences over two miles than a flat racer. That size means he isn't overworked; the yard picks his spots carefully rather than running him into the ground. This season in particular, Rich Rhythm has been a model of consistency, placing in race after race without quite getting his nose in front. His most recent six runs read 5-5-8-6-5-2, which tells you he is rarely far away, even if the winner's enclosure has stayed out of reach since April.

That last win came at Chelmsford on 24 April 2025, and Bethell is candid about what has happened since. His second place at Doncaster in late July — on normal ground — was arguably the best he has run for the yard, yet jockey Callum Rodriguez stepped off afterwards feeling the horse would have been even better with a bit of softness in the ground. The irony is that this year has offered precious little of it. Rich Rhythm goes well enough on normal conditions, winning 2 of his 9 races on them, but wetter ground might genuinely unlock another gear. He is also effective on the all-weather, which gives Bethell options across different surfaces and seasons.

He operates almost exclusively at Class 5 level — the bread-and-butter tier of British racing — where he has won 2 from 21 races, or just under 1 in every 10 attempts. Hector Crouch has ridden him six times and won once together, a win rate of around 1 in 6 which is meaningfully better than his overall average. With Bethell's yard having sent out 18 winners already this season, and a possible run at Ayr on the horizon, Rich Rhythm feels like a horse with another moment in him — he just needs the ground to play along.
