The highlight of his career came at Chester on 6 May 2022, when he won one of the top races in Britain — a Class 2. Jockey David Probert described him as a horse who can light up easily if put in a forward position, but when he relaxed and Probert pressed the button, the response was emphatic: he "really did point his toe out nicely," which in racing terms means he stretched out and ran with genuine class. That kind of performance at Chester, one of the most demanding and prestigious tracks in the country, is not something a horse forgets how to do.

What makes his current situation puzzling is that he has gone six races without a win. His recent form reads 8-6-6-3-4-6 — consistent enough that he is getting into the race, but not quite reaching the front. More striking still is that when running at Class 4 level — the bread-and-butter tier where most horses of his experience pick up races — he has gone 0 wins from 12 attempts. For a horse who has beaten good animals in a Class 2, that is a genuine curiosity. Whether that reflects the specific competition he has faced, or simply the unpredictable nature of horses, is hard to say.

His most recent win came at Doncaster on 24 July 2025, around 11 months ago, so the team at John and Sean Quinn's yard in Norton, North Yorkshire, will be keen to add to that tally. The Quinn yard has been in fine form this season — 44 winners sent out is a serious number and suggests the horses are arriving at the track in good shape. Regular partner Jason Hart, who has ridden him in 17 of his 37 races and won twice, knows this horse well. Red Mirage raced just yesterday, so clearly still has the appetite for it at eight years old. The question now is whether he can rediscover that Chester-day magic.
