The two wins he does have are worth a closer look. The first came at Sandown Park back in July 2022, and the second arrived at Lingfield Park on 10 April 2025 — nearly three years apart, which says everything about how rare these moments are. That Lingfield win is now 14 months in the rearview mirror, and the last six races have produced nothing better than a second place, with finishes reading 6-6-2-3-7-3. There are flickers of promise in there — that second and a couple of thirds suggest he is not disgraced — but the winner's enclosure feels a long way off right now.

Interestingly, his most common racing level has actually been his biggest stumbling block. In 15 races at Class 5 — which is towards the lower end of the competitive ladder, the sort of race designed to give horses like him a winnable opportunity — he has not won once. Not a single time from 15 attempts. That is a curious detail, and not a flattering one. His regular jockey Jack Doughty has partnered him 12 times for that 1 win together, a win rate of around 1 in 12.

He is trained by Tony Carroll at Cropthorne in Worcestershire, and Carroll is clearly a man who knows how to get horses winning — his yard has sent out 136 winners already this season, which is a seriously productive operation. Recon Mission, to put it gently, has not been among the busiest contributors to that total. But he is still racing, still placing occasionally, and still turning up. At ten years old, with half a century of races behind him, that in itself is a story.
