Rare Change

The clue to Rare Change's character lies in ground conditions. On fast, dry ground, he is a different proposition entirely—winning 2 of his 6 races on such surfaces, a win rate of one in three. Step him up in class, however, and he struggles; he has never won in a top-tier race from 6 attempts. His last victory came at Goodwood on 7 June 2026, now four months in the past. Since then his form has been patchy: 13th place, then 6th, two sevenths, a 6th again, and most recently 13th just a day ago. Finley Marsh, his most regular pilot, has won only once from eight races together. Yet Hughes and his team persist because they have glimpsed what Rare Change is capable of. At his best on forgiving ground and in the right race, he can deliver—but consistency remains his enemy, and his the yard are still searching for the formula that will turn occasional promise into genuine success.
