What's most telling is how Priapos performs in different circumstances. On dry, fast ground it wins roughly 1 in every 3 races (3 wins from 9), and on normal conditions it's even better at 2 wins from 5 races — a 40% win rate that feels almost like a different horse. But shift the ground to anything wetter and the ability seems to vanish. The horse also has a clear sweet spot in distance, winning 2 of its 6 races over 7 furlongs to a mile, yet shows almost no aptitude for Class 4 races (0 wins from 10), suggesting it belongs at a lower level. Most curiously, Priapos is a specialist at Carlisle, where it has won twice from three races, yet despite that pedigree at the track, it hasn't found the winner's enclosure anywhere in the past four months. Trainer Phillip Makin's Easingwold yard is having a solid season with 9 winners overall, but this horse seems to need the stars to align — the right ground, the right distance, the right level — or it struggles badly. For now, the form has turned patchy enough that a return to a shorter track at Carlisle on genuinely dry ground may be the kindest assignment.
