Pop Dancer

At Brighton, Pop Dancer is genuinely useful. He's won three of his fifteen races there, which puts him among the useful horses at that track. His last win came on 27 May 2025, which is now seventeen months in the past—a long time to go without success. But he hasn't given up entirely. He was last seen just a day ago, so he's still racing and still being asked to do his job. His recent form has been patchy: a tenth, a fifth, a sixth in his last three definite races, with gaps in between suggesting some races where he didn't run at all. There's no dramatic losing streak here, just the steady struggle of a horse in the middle years of his career trying to pick up a win.

Pop Dancer does better on normal ground. He's won two of his eight races on standard conditions, which is a quarter of the time—double his overall win rate. That's the sort of detail trainers notice and remember. His usual rider is jockey Luke Morris, who has two wins from twelve races aboard him, a win rate of about one in six. Tony Carroll's yard, based at Cropthorne in Worcestershire, is having a productive season with 136 winners, so Pop Dancer has a team around him that knows how to win races. Most of his victories have come in Class 5 races, the kind where a horse of his ability has the best chance. He's won five of twenty in that grade, exactly a quarter of the time. The question now is whether Pop Dancer can find the conditions—the right ground, the right race, the right running—to add to that total. At nine, he's got time, but not forever.
