The recent form figures — 4-2-3-5-7-7 reading from oldest to newest — are worth a closer look. That third and second place in the middle of the sequence show a horse capable of mixing it near the front. The problem is the last three runs have gone backwards, finishing seventh twice and fifth once, which suggests something is not quite clicking at the moment. Raced just yesterday, Polygram is clearly being kept busy, and the team at Irthington will be hoping that frequency brings improvement rather than fatigue.
Trainer Tristan Davidson operates out of Cumbria and has sent out 21 winners this season, which shows the yard knows how to get horses to the line first. That makes Polygram something of an outlier in the stable — a horse that keeps running without reward in a yard that clearly has the tools to get results. Polygram has spent almost all of its career at Class 5, the entry level of British racing, and has drawn a blank in all seven races at that level. At some point the question becomes whether a different approach — a different trip, different ground, or a longer gap between races — might unlock what the placed finishes suggest is somewhere in there.
For now, Polygram is a horse that keeps showing up, keeps finishing close enough to matter, but keeps leaving empty-handed. There is still time for that to change.
