The headline number is seven wins and seventeen places from fifty races, a win rate of around 14%, or roughly one win in every seven starts. That is a perfectly respectable record for a horse operating at this level, but what gives it real shape is where those wins have come from. At distances between a mile and one furlong and a mile and two furlongs, Plastic Paddy has won 7 of 29 races — that is nearly one in four, a 24% win rate that tells you this horse has a very clear comfort zone. Push it shorter or stretch it longer, and you are working against the grain.
The course record at Newcastle is the most striking detail in the file. Three wins from nine races there — one in three — is the kind of ratio that makes a trainer pick up the entries page with a bit more interest when Newcastle comes around. It was at Newcastle that Plastic Paddy got off the mark back in September 2021, and clearly something about the track suits this horse. Whether it is the surface, the shape of the turns, or just good fortune, the numbers are consistent enough to mean something.
The shadow over all of this, though, is time. The last win came at Wolverhampton on 30 March 2024 — over 28 months ago now — and the last six races have produced a sixth, a fifth, an eighth, and three blanks. That is not a horse threatening to break a drought; that is a horse whose best days look to be in the past. Frederick Larson, who knows Plastic Paddy as well as anyone having ridden together 14 times for 2 wins, has not been able to find the key recently. Trainer Tom McGuinness has sent out just one winner from his yard this season, so this is not a stable currently firing on all cylinders.
Plastic Paddy is a horse with a genuine story — a course specialist, a reliable performer at its best trip, and fifty races' worth of experience. Right now, the form says patience is being tested. But at Newcastle, over a mile and a bit, there is always a small reason to watch.
