Plage De Havre

The recent history tells the story. A debut win came back in February at Newcastle, then months passed before genuine breakthroughs emerged. Last week at Chester, Plage De Havre scored again, and just days later it was back in the winners' circle at Haydock Park in a Class 2 race—the sort of quick turnaround that shows the horse is in rare form and its trainer is confident enough to strike while the iron is hot. That win at Haydock is the kind of result that makes the yard sit up and take notice, because Class 2 racing in Britain sits at the sharp end of the sport. In the last six races, there have been two wins, a third-place finish, and a ninth—a lumpy record, perhaps, but one that includes genuine quality runs sandwiched between the rough patches.

Andrew Balding's Kingsclere yard has enjoyed a powerful season, and Plage De Havre is a horse moving in the right direction. With a win rate just shy of one in three across its career, and three wins packed into the last six races, the horse appears to have clicked into something resembling form. Whether it can sustain this remains to be seen, but right now, this five-year-old is very much a horse worth watching.
