Pellitory

O'Meara's yard, based at Upper Helmsley in North Yorkshire, has sent out 101 winners already this season, which tells you this is a serious operation that knows what it is doing. The trainer has spoken openly about taking time to understand Pellitory properly — a big horse standing at 16.2 hands, who needed races to learn and who, crucially, seems to be better over seven furlongs than a mile. Getting that small detail right about a horse can be the difference between a useful performer and a good one.

The Newmarket win was also a statement of intent. O'Meara revealed post-race that the team had been targeting that specific race all season, and that they came into it wanting to find out whether Pellitory was a handicapper or something better. The answer, on the day, was encouraging enough that a French Guineas entry was mentioned — not as a certainty, but as a genuine option worth thinking about. Pellitory also does much of his work alongside stable companion Wimbledon Hawkeye, which the trainer clearly sees as a mark in his favour.

His recent form does show six races without a win, which is worth noting honestly. At Class 2 level he has won 1 from 6 races, around 17% — or roughly 1 in every 6 attempts at the top tier. That is competitive without being dominant. But he raced just yesterday and remains very much in training, so there is more to come. For a horse whose trainer believes distance and class are finally clicking into place, that Newmarket win looks less like a ceiling and more like a starting point.
