Papagei

The most striking detail is what happens when Papagei steps up to a middle distance. At a mile and three to a mile and four furlongs, it has won 3 of its 10 races at that trip — 30%, or nearly 1 in every 3. That is a genuinely strong number, the kind that suggests a horse which has found its natural home at that distance. And yet, when it drops into the level of competition it faces most often — Class 4, one step below the top tier — it has won zero of its 12 races there. Somehow, a horse that wins at the right distance cannot convert when the class ought to be within its reach. Racing is full of these contradictions, and Papagei embodies one of them neatly.

The wins themselves tell an encouraging story. The first came at Great Yarmouth in April 2024, and the most recent at Haydock Park the following September — now 19 months ago. That long gap since its last victory, combined with recent form of 9th, 10th, 7th, 7th, and two unplaced runs, paints a picture of a horse that has gone a little cold. The last six races have produced nothing to shout about.

Daniel Muscutt, who has ridden Papagei in seven of its races, gives the partnership its best results — two wins from those seven rides, a win rate of 29%, or nearly 1 in every 3. That is a meaningful connection, well above Papagei's overall average, and worth noting if Muscutt is in the saddle again.

Gibney's yard has sent out five winners this season, so the operation is in decent working order. Whether Papagei can rediscover the form that brought those Haydock and Yarmouth victories remains the question. It raced just yesterday, keeping itself sharp — and with the right trip and the right jockey, there is clearly a win somewhere in this horse. It just needs to find it.
