Over Spiced

Grace Harris, who trains Over Spiced at Shirenewton in Gwent, has sent out 31 winners this season, so the yard is plainly functioning well. The most interesting partnership, though, is with jockey Ray Dawson. In seven rides together, Dawson has won twice—a 29% win rate that stands in sharp contrast to the horse's overall 12%. That is the kind of figure that makes you wonder whether this rider simply understands the horse better, or whether the pair have raced on the right ground at the right time. Either way, when Dawson gets the leg up, Over Spiced's chances noticeably improve.

Last win came at Bath on 4 May 2026, now five months in the rear view. The horse was active as recently as yesterday, and the last six races tell a story of a horse treading water: 6th, 2nd, 2nd, 5th, 3rd, 2nd. Those placings (four in the last six runs) show Over Spiced is mixing it at its level—typical Class 5 races—without quite delivering. It won its first career race at Leicester on 11 May 2024, so there is no doubt about its ability to win. The question now is whether the next dry track and the right jockey can unlock another victory, or whether Over Spiced has settled into life as a honest place-getter rather than a winner.
