The recent form tells a dispiriting story. In the last six races, Oneforthegutter has finished 5th, 7th, 8th, 8th, 7th and 8th—never better than mid-field, never threatening to win. Just a day ago it was out again, which at least shows the horse is still sound and the trainer, Ian Williams of Portway in Worcestershire, is still finding opportunities. Williams runs a productive yard that has sent out 96 winners this season, so Oneforthegutter is one among many runners, not a special project. Richard Kingscote, who has ridden the horse nine times, has yet to get a win out of it—a partnership that has clearly not sparked.
For a seven-year-old, Oneforthegutter sits at a crossroads. It has proved it can win at the highest standard on the rare occasion everything aligns, but those occasions are becoming rarer. Over fourteen months without a win is a telling measure of decline.
