What makes this run interesting is the gap since we last saw it. On The Inlet hasn't raced for roughly five months, returning from a substantial break. A layoff that long can mean almost anything — a minor setback, a deliberate freshening-up, or simply waiting for the right opportunity. The key question is whether the time away has done it good, because on the evidence of those three races, something needed to change.
The one genuinely encouraging thing here is the yard sending it out. Dr Richard Newland and Jamie Insole, based in Elmbridge in Worcestershire, have been in serious form this season — 48 winners is a significant tally and tells you this is an operation that knows how to get a horse ready to run well. They wouldn't be bringing On The Inlet back from a long break without believing there's something worth finding. When a stable in that kind of form decides a horse is ready, it's worth paying attention, even if the form book hasn't been kind so far.
