Navagio

The horse does have a clear preference when conditions go against him. On wet or muddy ground, Navagio wins roughly 1 in every 7 races (2 wins from 13 attempts), a marked improvement on his overall record. At distances between one mile and one furlong and one mile and two furlongs, he has won twice from fifteen tries — better than his overall average, though hardly spectacular. What stands out more is his complete inability to win in top-tier races: Navagio has zero wins from six attempts at Class 1 or 2 level, the kind of races where better horses run.

Ridden most often by Ben Coen, Navagio has managed one win in seven races together, a rate of roughly 1 in 7 — marginally better than his career average but not by much. The yard has been in decent form this season with eighteen winners saddled, so Navagio at least has the benefit of being trained by someone with winners in their arsenal. At this stage of his career, though, the horse appears to be a lower-grade performer grinding out a living at modest tracks, only occasionally capable of finding the winner's enclosure when the ground suits and the field is weak enough to let him through.
