Native Warrior

At five years old, he has won 5 of his 16 races (roughly 1 in every 3) and placed in 11 of them, meaning he has almost never run a completely blank race. That kind of consistent presence is rare, and it points to a horse who turns up ready to compete. His recent form is particularly striking: three wins from his last six races, with a seventh and a fifth sandwiched in between. For context, he has won two Class 2 races at Ascot — in September and October 2025 — plus a Class 2 at Newcastle before that. These are among the better races in Britain, and he has won three of them in the space of a few months. That is not an accident.

His trainer Karl Burke, based at Coverham in North Yorkshire, has had 145 winners this season alone — a yard operating at serious volume and serious quality. Burke has been open about what makes Native Warrior tick: heavy, wet ground is the key. On soft or muddy surfaces, he has won 2 of just 3 races — a remarkable 67% return — and Burke says he has never seen the horse looking better than he did heading into a Group 3 in France earlier this year. Burke's view is clear: this is a horse good enough to mix it at Group level, not just the big handicaps.

The distance sweet spot is 7 furlongs to a mile, where he has won 4 of 8 races, a 50% hit rate that is almost absurdly good. Jockey James Doyle has been in the saddle for 5 of his races and has won 2 of them together, keeping a 40% win rate that reflects the partnership developing well. And Ascot seems to bring out something extra — 2 wins from 4 races there, a course that suits him more than it suits most horses.

Most recently, Native Warrior won at Leopardstown just this week, which means he is fit, in form, and being aimed at better things. Burke believes the Group races are the right target now. On current evidence, it is hard to argue.
