Nap Hand

The career has had a couple of distinct chapters. Nap Hand broke its duck at Salisbury back in June 2022, and the trainer at the time, Alan King, had a clear picture of what he was dealing with — a free-running horse that liked to bowl along in front, best kept to shorter distances for the time being. King also reported that Nap Hand had schooled well over hurdles, hinting at a jump-racing future, though the flat was clearly still delivering results. The horse won at Newbury on deep, muddy ground, which showed a toughness that not every horse possesses, and King was candid that a mile and a quarter was pushing the limits.

Now with Chris Gordon — a trainer whose yard has sent out 51 winners already this season, which is a genuinely productive campaign — Nap Hand competes most regularly in Class 4 races, the solid middle tier of the sport. That context matters: it means this isn't a horse chasing glory at the top table, but one trying to win the kind of honest, competitive races that make up the bulk of the calendar. The record at that level is 1 win from 18 races, or roughly 1 in every 18 attempts, which tells you how hard those races are to crack even for a horse with real ability.

Most recently ridden by Tom Cannon, who has partnered the horse seven times for one win together, Nap Hand ran just yesterday and filled the placings again — its last six results read 3-8-2-3-2-5, all in the money or close to it, but without a win since Stratford-on-Avon in July last year. Twelve months is a long time. Whether that gap eventually closes, or whether this turns out to be simply what Nap Hand is — a reliable placer, a horse that earns its keep without quite scaling the heights — is the question hanging over the next few runs.
