His record of 4 wins from 29 races, winning roughly 1 in every 7 outings, does not leap off the page. But the shape of those wins tells a more interesting story. His first came at Salisbury in June 2022 over six furlongs on fast ground, where trainer Alan King noted that jockey James Doyle wanted to keep things short because Nap Hand travels so freely — a polite way of saying the horse can be hard to settle and risks running out of ideas if he burns his energy too early. Fast forward a couple of years and King had coaxed a mile and a quarter out of him on heavy, muddy ground at Newbury, which is about as different a test as flat racing offers. The fact that he handled both suggests a horse with more range than his record implies.
The most recent win came at Stratford-on-Avon in July 2025, which puts the last victory at roughly ten months ago. Since then, six races without a win, though the recent form of 3-2-8-3-4-4 is not the picture of a horse who has fallen off a cliff. He has placed in four of those six outings, which means he keeps turning up near the front without quite getting there — the story of many a likeable horse in the middle tier of racing. Most of his career has been spent at Class 4 level, one of the bread-and-butter tiers of British racing, and at that level he has won just 1 from 18 races, or roughly 1 in every 18, which is honest without being spectacular.
What makes Nap Hand genuinely interesting is where King thinks he might be headed. The trainer has talked openly about hurdling as a future option — Nap Hand has apparently schooled well over obstacles — with the caveat that staying two miles over jumps remains a slight question mark. The plan, as King put it, is to keep learning how to settle him, and there is a sense that the horse's real chapter might not have been written yet. He raced just yesterday, so whatever comes next is not far away.
