My Boy Jack

That might not sound like much, but when you consider that his win rate everywhere else is effectively zero, Wolverhampton is clearly something special for him. There is something about that synthetic surface, that tight left-handed track, that simply suits him. He first won there in February 2023, and his most recent victory came in July 2024. He has been back since and not added to the tally, but the track remains the obvious place to watch for him.

Those wins have all come over shorter distances — between five furlongs and six and a half furlongs, where he has managed 3 wins from 52 races at around a 6% win rate. He competes almost exclusively at Class 6, which is the entry level of British racing, and his 3 wins from 74 races at that level account for his entire career. This is not a horse who has stepped up to the big occasions and disappointed. He has found his level and stayed there.

What makes the story a little richer is where he started. Frost noted years ago that My Boy Jack had originally sold as a yearling for around £250,000 before being picked up at a breeze-up sale for 50,000 guineas — a dramatic fall in valuation that Frost quietly thought represented a bargain. That early promise never translated into anything approaching his original price tag, but the horse is still racing at seven years old and still drawing cheers from someone every time he turns up at Wolverhampton.

He has not raced for around three months now, and his last six runs have produced nothing better than a fourth place. Regular jockey Alfie Gee has ridden him nine times without a win.
