What makes Migdam slightly interesting is not what it has done, but the narrow window in which it does anything at all. The horse clearly prefers normal ground conditions, where it has won 2 of its 10 races — a 20% win rate that stands out sharply against its overall form. On faster or wetter ground, those four career wins suddenly look even thinner. The trainer, James Andrew Fahey at Stradbally in County Laois, runs a small operation that has managed five winners this season, so Migdam is hardly a priority in the yard. Its most frequent jockey, Adam Caffrey, has managed just one win from seven rides together, which tells you all you need to know about how the partnership has panned out.

At seven years old and having earned very little from a long racing career, Migdam is the kind of horse that hangs around the bottom rungs of racing, filling races and occasionally sneaking a place. It had its moment — that first win at Kempton Park back in 2021 — but it has never become the sort of horse that the yard could rely on. For a watcher, there is something almost poignant about a horse that has spent this long in training and racing without ever becoming genuinely good.
