Metallo

The horse performs noticeably better at distances between seven furlongs and a mile, winning one of every five races at that trip. In higher-class competition, too, he shows his best form — he has won one of every five races in Class 4 contests. Yet these are narrow windows of opportunity, and Metallo has struggled to find his way into the winner's enclosure within them. His recent form tells the story clearly: unplaced finishes mixed with fourth and second-place efforts over his last six races. He raced just a day ago and continues to run, still searching for that elusive second win.

John Butler's Newmarket yard has had a productive season, sending out thirty-nine winners, but Metallo has not been among the beneficiaries. The horse's most frequent partner in the saddle, jockey Rossa Ryan, has not tasted success with him either — five rides together have yielded nothing but places. Butler noted that Metallo was a promising two-year-old before encountering setbacks that interrupted his progress, and has been campaigned on the all-weather this winter. For a horse with just one win from twenty-two starts, Metallo remains a likeable middle-distance performer, but also a cautionary tale about how quickly a promising beginning can fade into a long search for a second chance.
