That sole win came at Salisbury on 28 June 2023, nearly three years ago now, and it was a result that hinted at real potential. Butler described it at the time as a performance that showed a good level of form — Metallo beat a horse called Dancing Gemini on just his second career outing, which is the kind of debut-season form that gets people excited. The trouble is, he has not been able to back it up. A setback in the spring disrupted his development, and Butler also had him gelded, which is sometimes done to help a horse settle and focus. Whether those changes have unlocked anything better is the question his recent results raise some doubt about.

His last six races read 10-4-4-6-4-11 — two fourth-place finishes in there, but bookending it all are a tenth and an eleventh, which are the kinds of results that suggest he is often running without ever threatening to win. His best performances tend to come over distances of seven furlongs to a mile, where he has won 1 from 4 races (25%), which is actually a much healthier picture than his overall record suggests. The problem is converting that relative comfort at those distances into a return to the winner's enclosure.

Jockey Rossa Ryan has partnered him five times without a win between them, and while that tells you something about where Metallo currently sits in the pecking order, Butler's yard has sent out 39 winners this season — so this is not an operation short of confidence or horses capable of winning. Metallo just has not been one of them for a while. At Class 4 level, where he most often competes, he has won 1 from 5 (20%), so the opportunity is there. Whether the now five-year-old can rediscover whatever made that Salisbury run so promising in the first place is the story worth watching.
