May Night

The horse is a course specialist at Wolverhampton, where it has won three of its six races there. That's a 50% win rate at one track, which is exceptional form. Even more telling is its preference for middle distances between seven furlongs and a mile: May Night has managed three wins from thirteen races at that distance, nearly double its overall win rate. Put it in a Class 4 race—one of the lower-tier competitive contests in Britain—and the record improves dramatically to four wins from thirteen starts, roughly one in every three races. These numbers suggest a horse that performs well when conditions align: the right track, the right distance, the right level of competition.

What complicates the picture is the absence of winners. May Night last won on 10 May 2024, more than two years ago. Its recent form reads 14-3-13-7-13-5 across the last six races, with only a third-place finish to show for the effort. It raced just a day ago, so the horse is active and still being given opportunities by trainer Raymond Hurley. Jockey Keithen Kennedy, May Night's most frequent partner, has won twice from twelve rides aboard—a 17% win rate together, slightly better than the horse's overall record but nothing that suggests a particularly potent partnership. At eight years old, May Night is not yet over the hill, but it needs to find its way back to the form that made it so dangerous at Wolverhampton and over its favoured distances.
