That solitary win came at Newcastle in October 2024, and it remains the one shining moment in a career that has otherwise been a long lesson in near-misses. He has placed eight times — finishing second, third, or close — which means he has been competitive without quite being able to close the deal. The last six races have produced finishing positions of 6th, 4th, 11th, 4th, 8th and 8th, a sequence that captures his story neatly: occasionally in the mix, more often just outside it, and that one sharp blip to 11th suggesting the odd bad day at the office.

His preferred distance is seven furlongs to a mile, and that is where he has done all his best work — including the Newcastle win. He has run 17 times over that range and won once, a rate of 6%, which is modest but at least something. The more troubling number comes from his record at Class 4, which is the level he typically competes at. In 13 races at that grade, he has not won a single one. The Newcastle victory actually stands as his only career win regardless of class, which makes it all the more precious to McSharry's team.

McSharry's yard has sent out seven winners this season, so there is form in the operation. Whether Maxi Boy can add to that tally at the age of nine — and 22 months after his last taste of success — is the real question. Most horses his age with his record would have been quietly retired by now. The fact that he is still running, still placing occasionally, and still clearly sound enough to race yesterday suggests someone in that team believes there is one more good day in him. Whether they are right is another matter entirely.
