Marvelman

The trajectory of Marvelman's season tells a good story. A first career win came at Kempton Park in March 2025 — a starting point — and then, six months later, a Class 1 at Doncaster. In between and around those wins there have been seven placed finishes, meaning Marvelman has rarely finished out of contention. The recent form figures of 14-1-3-3-9-2 show a horse who ran poorly twice but was otherwise competitive, and that Class 1 win sits right at the heart of it as the obvious high point.

Oisin Murphy, one of the best jockeys in Britain, has partnered Marvelman in six of those ten races and won both times, a remarkable conversion rate of 2 from 6 — winning a third of their races together. When a jockey of Murphy's calibre keeps coming back to the same horse and keeps winning on it, that is not coincidence. It suggests a real understanding between rider and horse that the team will be keen to maintain.

Marvelman is trained by Andrew Balding at Kingsclere in Hampshire, one of the most productive yards in Britain right now. Balding's operation has sent out 204 winners this season alone — a volume of success that reflects the depth of talent and expertise in that stable. Marvelman is not a big earner by the standards of elite racing, but for a three-year-old who has already won at the top level, the career arc is pointing in the right direction.

The one question mark is time. Marvelman has not raced for roughly five months, returning from a break that will have tested the patience of everyone following this horse. Whether that freshness helps or hinders on comeback day is the thing worth watching.
