Maghlaak

Start with the wet ground numbers. On soft or muddy going, Maghlaak has won 4 of 11 races — that is a 36% win rate, or well over 1 in every 3 attempts. For context, even very good racehorses rarely win that often. When the skies open and the track gets heavy, this horse transforms. Trainer Mark Walford confirmed as much, describing him as a horse who "likes to get his toe in" — racing shorthand for a horse that thrives when the ground is soft underfoot. Walford's yard has sent out 35 winners this season alone, so he knows what he is talking about.

The highlight of Maghlaak's career came at Goodwood in May 2024, when he won one of the top races in Britain — a Class 2 — on his comeback from a break. Jockey Jim Crowley noted afterwards that the horse "had a lot of weight" that day, meaning he carried a significant load designed to level the playing field, and still won. That is the kind of performance that sticks. Goodwood is also a course where Maghlaak has won 2 of just 4 races — a remarkable record at one of the most demanding tracks in the country, a place with sharp turns and undulating ground that sorts out the genuine horses from the pretenders.

There is also a jumping dimension to this horse's story. After a race at Wetherby, his trainer at the time Adrian Keatley described him as "a decent horse" whose "bit of class showed late on," adding that he was purchased as a dual-purpose horse — meaning he was always intended to compete both on the flat and over jumps. His dam, the mare who gave birth to him, won the Guineas, one of the most prestigious flat races in the world. That pedigree explains a great deal.

Maghlaak raced just yesterday, which means this is a horse very much in the middle of his story. His last win came at Southwell in November, six months ago, and his recent form has been patchy — a mix of mid-field finishes and one blank result. But with wet ground, a trip of around a mile and a quarter, and Goodwood on the horizon, the ingredients for another big day are all there.
